The reflecting pool

A clear conceit, a clever little lake
Where marble gods baroque set to surprise
Above, themselves, reflected, Egypt's guise,
With heads of jackal, lion, owl, and snake.

But as we bent down closer there to see
Saw, for an instant as the circles broke,
You, with a horse's head, as grey as smoke,
And there, beside you, Turth, the wild boar: me,

With bristling snout and little piggy eyes
The Celtic god of circling on and round
Set on my mirrored shoulders, and I found,
A truth far deeper than a lake's green lies.

The stone that centres circles in my hand --
Ah gods, your other heads would understand.

There isn't really a pool that does this, but there was a photo of a pool that I thought for a minute was reflecting the marble classical gods with animal heads, and this fell out.

Sponsored by my wonderful patrons at Patreon, who pay me for doing what I would do anyway because they're just that great, thank you all.
