A night by the hearth

Paul di Filippo, in the Barnes and Noble Review, writing about What Makes This Book So Great:

"The whole book is, for lack of a correspondingly gender-specific adjective, avuncular, rather like spending a delightful night by the hearth in Bilbo's hobbit hole, or with Mole and Badger."

Seriously, if that doesn't make you want to read it you should spend your money on something else.

It's also interesting that we do not have a gender-specific term meaning "aunt-like" and if we did, how it would mean something entirely different. Well, OK, I guess, as long as both roles are valuable and open to anyone.
