I was very surprised to discover that
Among Others has won the
Copper Cylinder Award. This is a new award from the people who do the Sunburst Award for excellence in the Canadian fantastic. (That's awarded by a jury, and
Among Others wasn't even nominated. This new Copper Cylinder is awarded by popular vote.) It's nifty to win a Canadian award, and it's especially nifty that it seems to be an actual copper cylinder -- it's named after the first Canadian scientific romance "A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder," by James De Mille (1833-1880). I don't know when I'll get the actual copper cylinder, but I look forward to adding it to my tchotchke shelf.
