Among Others spoiler thread

I know, it's only been out two days, you haven't had a chance to read it yet!

But some of you have, and I'm going to be away for the weekend -- going to Quebec City with Z and A to celebrate the book being out and take advantage of the very good deals on trains and hotels at this time of year. We've been saying we're going to do this for ages, and this is when we're actually going it. So for today, and then again from Monday when I'll be home, I will answer any questions you may have about Among Others.

Any questions? (Spoilers likely in comments.)
So, what's going on with the magic at the end? We're told all along that magic is this thing that you can never be sure it's worked, because it goes and arranges subtle coincidences of plausible things, and then at the end of the book there's turning torn book-pages into burning spears and the spears into trees that can walk.
