In re ILE1 -- something went *sproing!* in my back a few days ago when I was picking up something (something comparatively light, that should have been fine, but backs are funny that way). It did something to a muscle (I assume) in my left hip, and now all the writing about the cane(s) in ILE resonate much more strongly. I haven't needed a cane, but I've been doing a fair amount of groping for other supports.

My own hip is slowly improving, but reading ILE made the experience considerably more meaningful for me, resonating in both directions, if that makes any sense.

Well this is one response to the book I hope won't be widely shared!

And I hope you feel better soon.

Relevant to the last cluster of books, I just finished Of Men and Monsters. That is a fun book! I was also deeply startled, as I neared the end, to realize that the extraordinarily pulpy cover was a more-or-less accurate scene from the book, complete with nekkid barbarians.

What are you putting on/with the gnocchi?

Well, at the same time I put the water on for the gnocchi, I finely chop an onion and saute it in butter. When the gnocchi are nearly done, I add peas. Then I drain the peas and gnocchi and put them in with the onion, a slosh of cream, a handful of mozzarella, some basil and some chopped up brie. I then stir it until the cheese is melted. In the last little while I've had on different occasions on its own, with chicken, ham, bacon, beef casserole, and half a sausage. Though actually I had it with chicken twice.

The thing that's simultaneously nice and a problem with gnocchi is that they're unctuous. I find the sharpness of the brie helps, and the fresh juicy greenness of the peas helps.

Yes, I'm fond of asparagus with gnocchi for similar reasons.

It's so nice to see that word used about something other than Uriah Heep :-)

I am a huge fan of When the King Comes Home and reread it every 18 months or so. Excellent review.

I just made pumpkin gnocchi last night, actually. It turns out pumpkin goes very well in gnocchi, especially with a splash of melted butter with sage.

Do you not consider The Dragon Waiting to be a vampire novel? (I know you've said that you haven't read Sunshine or Fledgling.)

No, I don't consider The Dragon Waiting a vampire novel, though there are some vampires in it.

I have in fact read Sunshine. I don't like it.

Well, fair enough. I consider all of these books to belong to the subgenre of "clever reconsiderations of the vocabulary of vampirism", which I really like even though I don't care about vampires in particular; but I don't insist that they be for everyone.

I'm asking this a bit late, but I'm curious, as a GM: What's the roleplaying game? Are you running or playing? Do you mean "people sitting around a living room narrating the actions and speaking the dialogue of imagined people in an imagined situation," or is this one of those human/computer interaction things, or live action, or some other form or medium?
