Assorted Update
Firebirds Soaring containing my story "Three Twilight Tales" is out.

Recent Tor posts: S.P. Somtow's Jasmine Nights Janni Lee Simner's Bones of Faerie, Starship Troopers.

On Thursday I went to a very interesting public talk by Geoffrey Landis sponsored by McGill. It was about the cloud cities of Venus. What a great speaker, what a great combination of history, science, and speculation. If I'd known about it before that afternoon, I'd have mentioned it here in advance. They don't do so well on publicity. Still, lots of fun. And I hear that he's going to give it again at Anticipation! Don't miss it.

The weekend was kind of busy -- Z's girlfriend, A, has lots of brothers and sisters, all of whose names start with M. We took some of the younger ones to see the butterflies in the Jardin Botanique. This was a great success -- fortunately we got there when they weren't too crowded, so we went around the greenhouses at a reasonable pace and then had plenty of time to see the butteflies. The remodel of the "useful plants" greenhouse is a big improvement, and Z and I both confessed that we'd missed being able to see the fern room while the work was being done and that end of the greenhouse closed off. The little kids were enthusiastic about the plants, and ecstatic about the butterflies. I'll probably go to see the butterflies at least once more before the season ends. Yesterday, Z and A and I went to a flea market. This was a new experience, and surprisingly useful. We've also played two consecutive games of Cities and Knights of Catan, both of which I won, though last night's was incredibly close.

Advance warning -- next Sunday, 15th, between noon at 15h00, I am helping Indigo downtown celebrate their tenth anniversary. It's a "meet and greet" event but they don't seem to have anything online about it yet. There are going to be a number of local authors there doing "fifteen minute presentations" and hanging out and chatting. If you're local, please come! Meanwhile, I'm trying to think what a fifteen minute presentation about my books currently in print should be like. It's really easy for me to talk about the Small Change books, but Tooth and Claw is also out there... and Lifelode... I'm imagining rather silly dialogues on the "What do you write?" "What do you like?" lines. Any good ideas on how I should present myself?

Oh, and another couple of Lifelode reviews, Comrade Cat, and Hobbitbabe. Both positive.

Maybe the common theme is one of of using unreal worlds to present truth?

I don't know how you could do something in 15 minutes. Maybe you're turning a reader into an explorer, rather than a tourist? There's been times I've recognised a real place in one of your books, but not from any tourist-mapping.

Air is lighter than CO2, so you could build big glass air-filled bubbles and they'd stay up and you could live inside them. It would be so cool!

I just finished reading Tobias Buckell's Sly Mongoose which credits Landis's talk with inspiring its cloud city setting. Cool!

Umm, hi!

Tamu told me who you were on LJ, so I hope you don't mind my swooping in and friending you.

It was lovely to meet you at the party tonight (I'm the silly girl who squeaked at you when we were introduced). I'm very glad I decided to go after all. :)

Hi Jo,

Do you know the time period assigned to you for your 15 minutes? It is a long shot (I have to work on Sunday) but if I end up in the office downtown I might be able to get away for a break.

Best,
Brian

Between twelve and three, no more specific than that, sorry. If you can get away for a bit, do come and say hello anyway!
