I think you're right about the Mississippi, but I live six blocks from it, so I may be just slightly biased.

When I went to Denver on the train this summer, crossing it was an Event, in both directions, and clearly this was the case for everyone on the train.

I just finished reading Half a Crown, and I loved it. The ending was perfect, and I've now got that wonderful contented feeling that comes with knowing how things turned out. Thanks :)

I just thought of Deerskin last week and mentioned it in my post on rape in the movies. The book bothers the heck out of me, but I make a real effort on occasion and re-read it, because it is worth the effort. But only on occasion. I love the dog parts, but the rape and the childhood baggage parts are a little too tough for me unless I'm in exactly the right mood.

One of my profs dislikes most McKinley books because she finds the romances unpersuasive; she said "The men are all so old! How can these little girls fall in love with old men!" That criticism doesn't do much for me, obviously, but I think I can see yours. The weird thing is--and maybe this is my own weird baggage coming out--the only one of the romances that doesn't work for me is the one in Chalice, though I found all of Chalice to be weak.

So now I'm left wondering--what is it about me that I can so totally believe a romance between a woman and someone she initially thought was a monster, or at least someone not to be trusted? Heavy thoughts for a Wednesday. I'm going to have to give this one some thought.

I've really been enjoying your posts on Tor.com--they've given me a lot of food for thought, especially about the Sharing Knife books (which I love).
