Jim Rigney (Robert Jordan)
He died yesterday, after a long illness. I only met him once. It was at Mike Ford's funeral. He was such a lovely man. When he talked about how much Mike meant to him and could barely get the words out, he cared so much, there was hardly a dry eye in the house. Also he made the occasion more surreal for me by going out of his way to take the time to tell me that he liked my books, and he wasn't just saying it either. He was such a nice guy, such a good friend to friends of mine, so brave about his illness, and although I barely knew him the news of his death makes me feel as if the sun has gone behind a cloud.

ETA: I also wanted to link to this which I wrote when Jenna Felice died.

Yup, me too. I have a lot of friends who loved his series, and hoped for his recovery so he could continue his story. And lots of friends who'd met him and thought he was one of the world's sweeties, and hoped he'd recover good health for his own sake as well as for his storytelling.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear it. That was the only time I met him, too.

Thanks for including the link to the poem for Jenna.

I have loved that poem for Jenna for many years. Thanks for reminding me.

As for Jim, he took excellent care of Mike Ford, and that's all I need to know or remember about him.

All morning I have been imagining Jim and Mike together on a train, reunited, talking. Outside the window, there are stars: great honking big SFnal stars. Sometimes they look up and wave at passing spaceships.

I didn't even meet him the once, but I really wish I could have.

Funny, I was just thinking about Jenna Felice, in the context of urging someone else not to treat a serious asthma problem as something that goes away on its own [1]. Anyone can get cut down by a bolt out of the blue at any time and eventually we all will but we can with diligence adjust the odds one way or the other.

Note that when I was in Montreal, I made sure that I knew where my puffer was at all times [2].

1: As an example of how health problems can strike anyone down at any time and not because I have any reason to think that she ignored her health issues. This was because I had misremembered the cause of her death as asthma, which I believe is inaccurate.

2: On my desk in my office at home.

IIRC, she was allergic to cats, which Rob had, and she didn't take her meds and was struck before she could really do anything.
