Weather the weather whatever the weather
I like winter. But there comes a point in February when people on my f-list are talking about lambs and snowdrops (or even daffodils) and we have twelve centimetres more snow forecast and it feels as if winter has been going on forever and is going on forever and I'm a little tired of it. If midwinter celebrations had originated in Montreal in the middle of winter, there's no doubt they'd be celebrated about now -- Christmas here marks the beginning of real winter.

Then, every year, winter goes on and on, and it just becomes a fact of life and it doesn't seem as if it will ever end or the snow melt, and that's just the way things are and have always been, and you're totally used to it, when you come out of the metro you're automatically reaching for your gloves in your pockets. Then spring, when it does come (it always has so far) at about the beginning of May is a much bigger surprise than it ever used to be in Britain. Spring is startling. There's also the way it springs out at you like a jaguar from ambush and all the flowers burst out at once, just like in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

I think tomorrow, if I'm up for it, I'll go to the Biodome and see some hot green jungle. There's hot green jungle out of doors right now in Brazil, not to mention lambs and daffodils in Wales. It doesn't seem possible.
